Trusting God in the Midst of Change

Gail Poor~ I’m a Colorado native who loves the outdoors. I love cooking, baking, teaching kids, traveling, ministry, and quality time with friends, family, and my dog. I am a pastor’s wife, a sister, a daughter, a friend, and a cherished child of our King.

Change has always been a hard thing for me. I don’t mean change of scenery, routine, or change in my route to work. Those I really enjoy. Most people say I am easy going and a “go with the flow” kinda girl. But here I mean big life changes, those that shake you, move you, and are indeed brought on by a big God intending to change your life. I have often struggled with these changes, and being the processor that I am, it takes me a while to accept them too. Thankfully, God has placed some pretty great people in my life to help me who are full of patience and grace.

As my husband and I transition into a new phase of life with many changes, it brings a roller coaster of emotions. In this particular season, I am thankful for the extra time I have to think, pray, and process what God is doing in our life. Thoughts of fear and doubt from the enemy have definitely crept into my mind. Is this really what we should be doing? Maybe my husband heard God wrong? Could this be too big of a step for us? These questions too show that my faith in God has been unsettling.

Francis Chan in many of his works remind us that we should not live this life playing it safe. This life is not meant for us to be comfortable. Times of waiting are not always comfortable. Those days that I fear the unknown are the days where I have learned to cry out to God my most honest prayers, prayers for His guidance, His peace, and His wisdom. It is in this time I too feel God working on our character, our marriage, molding us to be more like Him. Yes, uprooting from this place we know as our home has its risks, but we are ready. We are willing.

“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.” 1 Corinthians 11:1

I have always felt God telling me that He has so much more for me in this life that I still have yet to experience. It is just that that drives me and gives me hope. It is the prayers and encouragement from loved ones that just prove it even more that God is good and He is up to something.

A dear friend recently said so simply (in response to our transition in ministry), “God already knows where you’re going to be.” Such a humbling truth that now runs through my mind daily. This is one of the first seasons in my life that I am releasing the reigns to God to let Him lead. Most of my life has been me in control rather than God in control and my time over His time.

Here are a few things that I would want readers to be encouraged by if in a similar season or just for your current situation. God’s timing is always best. He has the best in mind for His children, and when you earnestly seek after Him, it is easier to see Him weaving out the details for your life. Another important thing is to never stop praying. I am by no means a perfect example of this, but in times of change or uncertainty, cling to Him with all your being. Being in His presence is the best place to be.

Though I don’t quite know where God will lead us or fully know what all He has in store, it is comforting to know that He knows. You may be in a similar situation faced with unknowns and a million questions, but take heart knowing God is with you in every season. Practice embracing change and transitions with the anticipation that God is using you and working through you for better purposes.
